I personally find that it makes a field much more interesting and approachable if one knows something about the people who have made major contributions to it: It makes the field seem more of a dynamic human enterprise and less a dry collection of results.
In this appendix, I attempt to provide brief biographical sketches of some major figures in computing, along with pointers to more extended (and reliable!) biographies.
