Noise functions map a point in space to a value between -1 and 1. They are frequently used to create clouds and other irregular shapes in computer graphics.
This one is Darwyn Peachey's lattice noise function with cubic Catmull-Rom interpolation, from his chapter in Texturing and Modelling, A Procedural Approach.
